Clarifying his statement that the Communists had sparked Maoist violence in a few States, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday said the Left parties have a natural affinity for the Maoists.
Joining issue with Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary A.B. Bardhan, Mr. Karunanidhi in a release on Friday recalled the editorials and articles in the organs of the Left parties at the time of the overthrowing of monarchy in Nepal in 2008 by Maoists.
Stating that Naxalites were basically Communists, Mr. Karunanidhi asked why the Left parties opposed the Centre's ban on Maoists.
The CPI (M) general secretary had reacted then that the ban would have no effect and the issue needed a political solution.
Why should the Left leaders air such opinion or write editorials if they had no affinity to the Maoists, Mr. Karunanidhi asked, clarifying that this prompted him to write that the Communists' spark had resulted in Maoist violence in a few States.
