‘Gangajal’ is available at two post offices in the city

‘Gangajal’, water from the Ganges packaged in a bottle, will be available in select post offices across the State.

The sale of bottled Gangajal was launched in Patna on Sunday by Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Manoj Sinha. The product has become an instant hit in the State with the first stock received in Chennai sold out in a day, said officials of Postal Department.

At present, Gangajal, which comes in 200 ml and 500 ml packs, is being sold at nine ‘post shoppes’ — Chennai GPO, Anna Road head post office, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore head post office and Tallakulam in Madurai.

J.T. Venkateswarulu, Postmaster General (mails and business development), said that Gangajal, which is considered sacred by Hindus, is supplied by the Uttarakhand postal circle, packaged in Delhi and distributed to other circles across the country. “We received 395 bottles on Monday and the stock was sold out in a day. We have placed orders for 2,000 more bottles due to the huge demand,” he said.

While 200 ml bottles are sold for Rs.15, the 500 ml bottles are priced at Rs. 22. The department is set to receive 1,200 more bottles in two days and this will be distributed to other parts of the State as well. “We plan to expand sales in other post offices depending on the availability,” said Mr. Venkateswarulu.
