Work on skywalk at Kempapura begins

June 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - BENGALURU:

Work on a pedestrian skywalk at the busy and often dangerous Kempapura junction has finally begun over two months after two persons were mowed down by a speeding water tanker.

It was in March that the compound walls of Esteem Mall and Hebbal Electric Crematorium were demolished to make way for the skywalk, about 10 days after the shocking incident. Demand for a measure to ensure pedestrian safety had been growing since then.

The proposal for a prefabricated metallic skywalk, complete with two elevators on both sides, was delayed after the first hurdle was cleared. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had notified land for acquisition to widen the road at the junction in 2011, but the work had been pending since then.

The road-widening project, which has been on the backburner, was the main reason for the delay in the skywalk project.

The Rs. 2.4-crore skywalk project is being funded by Columbia Asia hospital.
