The Yeshwantpura police have registered a case of cheating and forgery against a woman who allegedly tried to claim insurance of ₹87 lakh by forging documents to show that her son had died. Based on a complaint filed by the sales manager of a private life insurance company, the police have charged the accused, Anju Kumar, with cheating and forgery.
In his complaint, the sales manager Prashanth said that Ms. Kumar had taken a policy on behalf of her son in June 2013 for ₹87.5 lakh. She had paid the annual premium for five years till 2018. In September 2018, she approached the company to claim the insured amount stating that her son had died. “She submitted the documents including proof of residence and a death certificate that was supposedly issued by a government hospital.” said the police.
As per procedure, the executive cross-checked the residential address in the form to find that the accused did not live there. When the company contacted the doctor of the hospital at Doddaballapura whose signature was on the certificate, they learned that it was fake.
“The doctor confirmed that he had not issued any such certificate and that it was is forged,” said the police. Prashanth approached the police on Tuesday seeking legal action. Based on the documents provided by the complainant, the police took up a case and are on the lookout for Ms. Kumar.
