Woman, kin assaulted over ‘caste feud’

May 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Bengaluru:

In an alleged caste feud over marriage, a 24-year-old woman from a ‘lower’ caste and four of her family members were assaulted by an ‘upper’ caste family at Kadugodi on Saturday.

While the victim’s father suffered fracture on his left hand, the victim, her two brothers and an uncle sustained head injuries, and they have been admitted to Victoria hospital.

The victim was in love with Sunil Kumar (30), who worked with her in a travel agency at Koramangala, for four years, and has a seven-month-old child out of wedlock. While the woman’s family had not opposed the relationship, Sunil’s family was against it.

In a bid to persuade Sunil’s family to agree to marriage, the couple decided to have a child. However, during the last month of pregnancy, Sunil allegedly backed out owing to pressure from his family, the police said.

The girl’s family had also filed a complaint with the Varthur police in September last.

On Saturday, Sunil’s family called the woman’s family for a meeting. “Six persons — Sunil, his father, Jayaram, mother Gowramma, brother Vinod, brother-in-law Praveen and sister Swapna — had come with machetes, iron rods and sticks to assault us. Calling us names that we belong to a ‘lower’ caste, they assaulted all of us with the weapons,” the victim alleged in her complaint.

Meanwhile, Sunil and his family members have filed a counter-complaint with the Varthur police accusing the girl and her family members of assaulting them.
