A 30-year-old woman, who delivered a baby girl a month ago, has been arrested on the charge of stealing gold valuables worth Rs. 7 lakh from the house of another woman, who had given her shelter.
The accused, J. Pragna, had been separated from her husband and had come to the Police Commissioner’s office to file a domestic violence case against her husband early this year when she met Savitha, an employee of a media house. Moved by her plight, Savitha not only accommodated the accused in her house in Malleswaram, but also later helped her get a paying guest accommodation. On March 21, Pragna took a lock repairer to Savitha’s house and got the duplicate keys done. Later using the keys, Pragna robbed gold valuables worth Rs. 7 lakh and returned to her paying guest after locking the house, police said, adding that Savitha returned home only to find the house ransacked and valuables missing.
Though the domestic help was suspected initially, Malleswaram police gave her a clean chit.
The police have recovered the gold valuables, which Pragna had pawned. When the accused was produced before the court, she was granted bail taking note of the needs of the one- month-old baby.
