A 30-year-old woman was apprehended by members of the public as she was fleeing after trying to snatch a chain from a senior citizen in Srinagar on Saturday.

Geeta, a resident of Byatarayanapura, was the woman who unsuccessfully tried to snatch a chain from Rajamma (65), who was sitting in front of her house.

As the woman screamed, a group of youth playing cricket nearby rushed to the spot and apprehended Geeta and recovered the gold chain. She was later handed over to Hanumanth Nagar police.

Geeta, in her statement to the police, has stated that she was in dire need of money to fund her two children’s education.

Inspired by a slew of chain-snatching incidents in the city in the last two days, she attempted to snatch a gold chain, she reportedly said.
