The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have arrested a police sub-inspector and a constable for “robbing” one kg of gold jewels from a domestic help, who was allegedly involved in a series of thefts.
The accused sub-inspector R Vijay (26) and constable Yogesh attached to Siddapura police station have been taken into custody.
Another constable, Syed Mohammad Rasool Saab (25), also from Siddapura police station, who is part of the crime, is on the run and efforts are on to nab him.
The accused, while investigating a case, stumbled upon the information about the domestic help, Kavitha, and her associates allegedly robbing valuables from their employers’ houses. They soon moved to other areas in search for new targets. They managed to track her down to a rented house in Maratahalli.
Vijay, along with his team, claimed to be police from Tamil Nadu, and searched her house and recovered one kg of gold valuables and 10 SIM cards, 10 mobile phones along with Rs. 1 lakh cash.
Though they seized the valuables, they did not inform their higher-ups and allegedly shared the valuables among themselves.
Meanwhile, the Hulimavu police who were tracking down Kavitha in one of the theft cases, picked her up where she reportedly revealed that stolen booty had already been taken away by a team of police from Devagiri police.
Further verification by the Hulimavu police revealed that it was the Siddapura police who had seized the booty and pocketed it.
The matter was brought to the notice of City police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar who ordered the CCB to conduct a detailed enquiry.
A team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police , Subramanya, swung into action and picked up Vijay and Yogesh, who not only confessed to the crime but also handed over their share of booty.
The accused have been booked under Section 411 of IPC.
The police have also picked up Kavitha and her associate Harinath Reddy for further investigations.
According to the police, Vijay was serving his first posting as probationary period in Siddapura after completing his training. He worked as a lecturer in a private college in the city before joining the police service.
