A railway employee and a worker employed by a contractor of South Western Railway were killed after a train ran over them while they were doing patrolling work.

The incident took place around 2.20 a.m. on Thursday between Varadhapura and Bisanatam railway stations of the Bengaluru–Chennai route. The deceased are Hari Singh Meena and Ramaswamy.

According to a release from SWR, Meena was accompanied by Ramaswamy in carrying out cold weather track patrolling. The accident was noticed by another patrolman, Ramakrishna, who then contacted his higher-ups. “An ambulance was arranged and railway doctor Srinivas reached the site and declared Meena and Ramaswamy dead. Later, the bodies were shifted to the government hospital in Bangarpet for post-mortem,” the release said.

Meena was a native of Malan village in Rajasthan while Ramaswamy was from Gudupalli village in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Meena had received felicitation from the Railways for detecting rail/weld failure, which helped prevent accidents.
