In a freak accident, two motorcycle riders were charred to death and a pillion rider severely injured when the vehicles collided and caught fire on the busy Chanenahalli Road in Taverekere on Sunday. The bodies were sent to R.R. Hospital for post-mortem. One among the deceased is Sampath (35), a resident of Magadi taluk.

According to the Taverekere police, the accident took place around 7.45 p.m. The two motorcycles were coming from opposite directions. When they collided, there were sparks and the petrol tanks exploded. Passersby tried to help the victims, but the two riders could not be saved.

The pillion rider was tossed up in the air. He sustained grievous head injuries and is fighting for his life.

The police are trying to establish the identity of the second deceased and the pillion rider.

A case has been registered in Taverekere police station.
