Two employees of a private company were asphyxiated while cleaning a sump at an industrial unit at Harohalli on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.

Umesh, 28, and Dilip, 27, were working for the company in Rajajinagar that services sewage treatment plants. According to the police, when the two reached the factory premises, Umesh, who entered the sump first without proper protective gear, may have inhaled some toxic gas. He did not respond to his colleague’s calls. Worried, Dilip jumped into the sump to rescue Umesh. By the time help arrived, the two men were dead.

The police said the men were neither equipped with safety gear such as masks nor were they carrying flashlights.

“A case of death due to negligence has been taken up against the company. We have summoned the management for questioning,” said a senior police officer.
