The story no one wanted to be told

“We wanted the narrative to be global, as the issue is relevant to all women,” says Ashwini Sidwani, writer of The Silence , directed by Gajendra Ahire, which was screened at the ongoing Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes).

The film is based on a real life incident of girl child abuse that took place nine years ago. “The girl involved is now 21 and she wets her bed even today,” says Ms. Ashwini. “No one wants to talk about the issue. That is what made us name the film The Silence .”

The story of the abused child is told through the effect the incident has on her parents and friends. Ms. Ashwini was working on her TV serial Nyay , which dealt with domestic violence, when she stumbled upon this case.

She says it was difficult to go along with the tragedy, personally, while making the movie. In fact, many people discouraged her from going ahead with it. “Someone even accused me of spoiling family relationships,” she says.
