As many as 26,698 students will be get their degrees on April 6 at the RGUHS convocation. Sixty-nine students, of which 70% are women, will be awarded 103 gold medals.
Among the graduating students, 51 will get Ph.D., another 5,140 are postgraduates, 188 are fellowship students, and 130 are super speciality students. Seventeen are certificate course students and the rest are undergraduates. Kuthupady Govinda Das, retired professor of medicine, and Govindaraj Subramani, cardiologist, will be conferred honorary doctorate. Some of the high-flyers:
Deepti Agarwal, five gold medals and one cash prize, JJM Medical College, Davangere
Studying four hours a day and referring to her exhaustive notes helped Deepti clinch the medals. A third generation doctor in the family, she looked to her parents for inspiration. She is currently preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and plans to pursue radiology or dermatology.
Swathimutthu B.N., five gold medals, SDM College of Ayurveda and Hospital, Hassan
The daughter of a farmer and primary school teacher, this ayurvedic doctor says that she was inspired watching movies and growing up with her grandmother who used to prescribe home-made remedies. She plans to build a career gynaecology, and hopes that medical education will be become less expensive so that more students get the opportunity to become doctors.
Bhagyashree U.G., four gold medals, Belgavi Institute of Medical Sciences
This gold medallist believes that hard work was the key to her success. She studied theory only three hours per day and focused on practicals for another three hours. Her mother, who is a gynaecologist, is her biggest inspiration.
