A reporter with this newspaper and a bank employee thwarted a mugging attempt in Bengaluru on Tuesday night.
At 9.30 that night, the business reporter with The Hindu was riding home near the Jakkasandra bus stop when he noticed two men on a motorbike rushing helter-skelter out of a narrow lane and turning into thick traffic on the main road. Some people were chasing them from the lane.
He came to know from them that they had just snatched a bag from a woman and were escaping. In the impact, the victim had fallen on the road and sustained injuries.
The reporter and another Samaritan, Purushottam, of American Express Bank, chased the muggers for a short distance. The two snatchers fell down and fled the scene, abandoning their bike and the bag.
The reporter locked the bike, collected the bag informed the Police Control Room of the incident. Police from the Koramangala station rushed to the scene and took charge of the motorcycle.
The police, who are looking for the muggers and the owner of the motorcycle, later said the bag contained a passport, a bunch of keys and some cash.
