Surge in demand for pet boarding centres

Pet owners are looking for ways to keep their animals away from sound pollution

Deepavali is a hard time for pet owners who have to make elaborate arrangements to keep their animals comfortable and away from the blast of crackers.

“Noise pollution is unbearable. Some people start bursting crackers early in the morning and continue through the night,” said Gayatri Balaji, who lives in J.P. Nagar.

“Animals are sensitive to noise. It breaks my heart to see my dogs running out of fear when they hear a firecracker,” said Ms. Balaji, who has two dogs. She keeps all the windows shut, creates a comfortable shelter for her pets and ensures she is around to comfort them.

Not all can handle it well, and many opt for pet boarding centres, who have a busy time from Dasara to New Year. “All the kennels are booked for Deepavali. The number of calls from pet parents go up many fold during this time of year. We can accommodate around 30 dogs in the centre,” said Prashanth, owner of Puppyoye Dog Boarding and Dog Park located at Electronics City.

“Some of us travel during Deepavali and cannot take our pets along. Pet boarding centres are a good option to ensure our pets are safe and comfortable,” said Shiva N., who has used the services of the such facilities before.

Less noise

What works for these centres is that most of them are located away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Puppyoye, for instance, is some distance away from residential areas and has a lot of open space.

“The noise level is lesser here. But, we go a step ahead to ensure our boarders are comfortable. We give aromatic therapy for the dogs. During the peak cracker bursting hours, we have at least five people staying with the dogs to keep them calm. We also send photos and videos of the dogs to the pet parents every day, so that they are reassured,” he said.

Hotel for Dogs is another boarding centre, which is near an agricultural land in Sarjapur. “Our kennels are fully booked for Deepavali. We have air-conditioned kennels which are sound proof, so the pets are comfortable,” said R. Kesav, in charge of the centre.

Petspace in Kodathi and Pawse in Yelahanka are some of the other options for pet owners. On an average the cost is ₹400 for day boarding, ₹600 for overnight.
