Staggered holidays return to haunt industries in Bengaluru

October 16, 2015 09:50 am | Updated March 24, 2016 07:23 pm IST - Bengaluru:

With the power supply scenario in the State showing no sign of improvement, industries in Bengaluru and other parts coming under Bescom jurisdiction have been asked to plan for staggered holidays starting Monday.

While the power utility has assured power supply for six days in a week, industries in different areas will have to shut down on different days instead of the current fixed weekly holiday on Sunday. The move is expected to be reviewed only in December when the situation is expected improve with power purchased flowing into the grid.

The move is expected to help Bescom save around 150 MW daily that can be diverted to domestic consumers, who have been hit hard by frequent power outages.

The shortage of power is currently around 2,400 MW with Bescom accounting for around 1,000 MW.

“We want industries in different areas to give holidays to their employees on different days of the week. This will result in some savings, which can help us bring down the peak load,” said Bescom Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey.
