St. Paul’s aces TCS IT Wiz regional round

In a nail-biting finish, ‘Tech Nerds’ from St. Paul’s School, J.P. Nagar, provided the right answer to the question “What term was used in 1995 with the founding of percept software by Judith Estrin and Bill Carrico?” (answer: IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) to ace the regional finals of the TCS IT Wiz, an interschool IT quiz held at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, here on Thursday.

The team from St. Paul’s, comprising Harikiran. C. and Siddharth Srivatsa, were tied with the team from Sri Kumaran Children’s Home (CBSE) after the final round of quizzing. Both teams scored 55 points.

Tie-breaker

The winning team held its nerve to provide the right answer to the tie-breaker question to garner one point and pushed the SKCH team to the second position.

“Our school was the defending champion and we are extremely happy that we have retained the (regional champions) trophy,” said Harikiran.

“Competitions such as these need different kind of preparation. Hari’s interests are in IT personalia, software products and brands and my interests are in gadgets, advertisement of IT and communication companies, gaming and blogging. Today, our hard work has paid off and our preparations for the mega finals will begin from today itself,” said Siddharth.

Both Class 11 students received an iPad each and trophies besides a host of goodies from sponsors.

They will also represent Bangalore at the mega finals to be held in New Delhi to choose the ‘smart tech wizard 2013’.

The SKCH team received a tablet PC, trophies and a host of goodies.

After the written round, six teams made it to the final round. National Public School, Indiranagar, Delhi Public School (Bangalore East), National Public School, HSR Layout and Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College also made it to the final round.

The event saw some edge-of-the-seat moments as teams vied with each other to provide the right answers.

Former international athlete Reeth Abraham was the chief guest at the valedictory function and gave away prizes to the winners. An interactive ‘twitter’ contest was held during the quiz to engage with the students in real-time as part of social media outreach programme by TCS. As many as 1,700 tweets were recorded during the regional finals.
