Sooligunte housing will take three years

It will take three long years for the housing project to rehabilitate the evicted residents of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) Quarters to be ready at Sooligunte, Sarjapur. This means that the thousands of families, ejected from their sheds at Ejipura, will have to make their own arrangements during the interim period.

A senior official said Karnataka Slum Development Board said the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had already handed over five acres to the KSDB on Survey No.122 in Sarjapur. KSDB is ready with a detailed project report (DPR) to house over 900 residents, who are not the original allottees of the EWS Quarters at Ejipura, in five-storeyed housing complexes there.

The State government had granted “in-principle approval” on January 7 to the Rs. 57.09-crore project that may be taken up under the Rajiv Awas Yojana. “We are hoping to get the Centre’s nod. A team of officials will be going to New Delhi on January 30. It is only after this that we will be able to float tenders and appoint an agency to execute the project.”

Asked if KSDB could make alternative arrangements for the evicted residents, the official pointed out the board was only a construction agency.

“We are not responsible for rehabilitation. Once the housing complex is completed, it will be handed over to the BBMP for maintenance.”

Also, he said, it was BBMP’s responsibility to identify and certify beneficiaries. “It identified over 900 families that settled down in Ejipura between 2003 and 2010 who were given biometric cards. Those who came later will not get the houses.”

The houses are 90 per cent subsidised and the beneficiaries will have to pay just Rs. 35,000.

This, the official said, was a “good deal” as Sarjapur is an upcoming area just 15 km from the city.

“The location is near the main road and is well connected.”

He claimed there were ample job opportunities in the area what with several garment factories and industrial hubs nearby.
