A 36-year-old software engineer was reportedly kidnapped by five persons on Thursday and released after ₹17 lakh was given to the kidnappers.

Jita Mitra, a resident of Anand Nagar, was returning home from work when the gang allegedly intercepted his car near Sanjay Nagar.

The accused allegedly forced their way into the car and drove to an isolated place in Hebbal where they assaulted and tortured him. Eventually, Jita told them the names of five of his friends. The gang called two of the friends — Waseem and Prabhu — and demanded a ransom.

In his complaint, Jita said Waseem and Prabhu were called to Jayamahal and Mehkri Circle at different times to hand over the ransom.

Fearing that Jita would approach the police, the gang allegedly forced him to sign documents of vehicle transfer and claimed they would ‘return’ the car in a week if a complaint was not filed.

The Hebbal police have registered a complaint. “We have summoned Waseem and Prabhu to give a statement, as they claim to have seen the kidnappers."
