Six-year-old sexually abused in city school

Child helpline of no help

October 31, 2014 12:34 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 04:51 am IST - Bangalore:

Child helpline has been established to help children in distress. But on Thursday, it was all but of any help. When the family of the six-year-old victim tried contacting the child helpline, they got no response. They were forced to seek help from the Child Welfare Committee, who rushed to the spot and took the child to hospital for medical examination.

Angry citizens protest

When the news of another sexual abuse of a young child at a private school spread, angry citizens gathered at the Jeevanbimanagar police station. Over 150 people were all set to take matters into their own hands and “punish” the school teacher accused of sexually abusing the child. Citizens, most of them members of political outfits, tried to barge into the police station as well. The police had to resort to mild caning to prevent them from barging in and dispersed the mob.

Not the first time, after all

It is not the first time that this private school has been in the news for the wrong reasons. In September this year, the police filed a First Information Report against the school for not implementing the safety guidelines. The safety guidelines, issued by the police in July 2014, were to be mandatorily implemented by all schools by August-end.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar told presspersons that the police had even filed a criminal case against the school for non-compliance. He added that to date, there is only one CCTV camera in the school.

The Department of Public Instruction had instructed all schools to step up security for schools by October-end.
