Six BPO employees who had been on a picnic to Chunchi Falls to celebrate the birthday of a colleague, were stranded on a rock around 25 metres from the river bank, when the water level rose suddenly on Sunday evening.
They were stranded for at least 10 hours before fire and emergency services personnel managed to rescued them using a boat.
The group had gone to the rock to get a better view of the river and take photographs. They were taking selfies on their mobile phones when the water level started rising. Before they realised the gravity of the situation, they were stranded.
Stephen (23), Pramod (24), Akshatha (24), Kavya (21), Reshma (21) and Kokila (22) continued to stand there, all the while hoping that the water did not rise further and submerge the rock.
They are residents of the city and work with HGS BPO.
Rescuers said that the current in the river was very strong on Sunday evening and taking a boat to the rock had proven difficult.
Eventually, they made it to the youths on a boat and rescued them.
