ShamiWitness still trending

more-in

Though @ShamiWitness has been blocked, the pro-IS tweeter Mehdi Masroor Biswas’s arrest is now trending on Twitter.

While an online campaign in support of @ShamiWitness is gaining momentum, the strong anti-Mehdi tweets are also making their presence felt.

Tweeters have been using several hashtags to express solidarity with @ShamiWitness — #supportShamiWitness, #FreeShamiWitness and #WeAreAllShami.

A tweeter, @analyst8, using the hashtag #supportShamiWitness, tweeted, “Character assassination of brother Mehdi is hurtful to watch. Ya Allah grant him and his family sabr”. Another tweeter, @mashroom1234, tweeted, “Mehdi Masroor Biswas. Stood for what he believed in. He’s no criminal. #FreeShamiWitness #WeAreAllShami”.

Hitting back at those supporting Biswas, @Amoka wrote, “Disgusting that ppl dare to claim for freedom of expression when all they preach is the opposite #FreeShamiWitness #Go2JailShamiWitness”.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Central Crime Branch, Abhishek Goyal, who is the investigating officer in the case, has received a threat on Twitter. Mr. Goyal, who confirmed this, told The Hindu that the origin of the threatening tweet and the identity of the tweeter were being investigated. Conceding that there was a larger campaign on Twitter in support of @ShamiWitness, he said the threatening tweet could be part of this campaign.
