Several areas face another day of power blackout

January 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - Bengaluru:

Several areas in Bengaluru faced power outages for five to six hours for the second consecutive day on Monday as work continued on rectification of a technical snag in the power transmission network.

The trouble began on Sunday following a power surge from a lightning arrestor installed on the Nelamangala-Peenya transmission line.

The tripping of the line had a cascading effect on the power network of the region as another line too faced an outage owing to overloading.

The rectification of the technical fault was a challenge for Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) as the demand for power was higher on weekdays unlike weekends when the consumption would be low due to closure of industrial units. To make up for the power shortage, Bescom resorted to load shedding in several areas on a rotational basis.

Shutdown for six hours

For residents of some areas, including Yelahanka and its surrounding areas, the actual load shedding touched six hours.

The residents have been facing a regular one-hour power shutdown owing to congestion in the transmission network.

The Bescom officials said that power shortage was brought down by getting additional power from Hoody and Hebbal stations.

The areas affected due to the technical snag included Peenya, Hebbal, Nelamangala and Yelahanka.

The trouble started in the morning as people in several areas woke up to load shedding from 6.30 a.m.

No power supply

Unscheduled power cuts were also reported from Malleswaram, Vyalikaval, Palace Guttahalli, Seshadripuram, Abbigere, Jalahalli, Ganganagar, Sanjaynagar, Kodigehalli, Yeswanthpur, Matthikere, Benson Town, Fraser Town, Venkateshpura, Tasker Town, Bharathi Nagar, B. Station, Ulsoor, Lingarajapuram, Cooke Town, Banaswadi, Babsabaplaya, Kothanur, Nagawara, Hennur, Govindpura, Gandhinagar, Cottonpet and R.T. Street.

This was due to an incoming supply failure due to a breaker fault in the

220 kV Hebbal station.
