The civic body on Wednesday called off the search for Shantha Kumar, the mason who went missing in a storm water drain (SWD) during heavy rain on Saturday night.

Mayor G. Padmavathi announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for his family.

Fire and Emergency Services, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force had been involved in the operation.

Deputy Commander (Operations) of NDRF Pradeep K.K. said that they had searched nearly 8 km from the point in Kuruburahalli where the mason went missing. “The decision to call off the operation was taken by the BBMP Chief Engineer,” he said.

However, BBMP Chief Engineer (SWD) Siddegowda said that 150 of its employees would continue the search. "All possible locations along the 30-km stretch of the canal from Jnanabharathi campus to Byramangala lake have been covered," he said.

Mayor G. Padmavathi is expected to call on Shantha Kumar's family on Thursday morning.

Shantha Kumar had entered the drain in Kuruburahalli in heavy rain to save electronic equipment kept in an earthmover.
