With most roads being in bad shape, the government is set to launch road improvement works in the city at a cost of Rs. 1,200 crore from January 2016.
Disclosing this to reporters on Tuesday, Bengaluru City Development Minister K.J. George said the tender process had already begun. The State Cabinet had recently cleared these works, he noted.
Apart from this, work on filling up potholes would also resume soon after the rains relent, he said.
The Minister admitted that most of the roads in Bengaluru city are in a bad shape.
This was mainly due to the fact that no major road improvement works had been taken up in the city after 2008, he alleged while squarely blaming the erstwhile BJP government for the present pathetic condition of roads.
He alleged that substandard works undertaken by the BBMP by the previous dispensation led by the BJP too was responsible for the roads being in bad shape now.
He said the government had decided to put the onus of ensuring quality works on the engineers concerned besides blacklisting the contractors responsible for shoddy works.
The Minister said the government is also examining a proposal to build a township on the outskirts for low income groups, such as domestic workers, drivers and labourers.
Responding to Monday’s protest by residents of Whitefield against poor infrastructure facilities and civic amenities,
Mr. George said the government would resolve the infrastructure woes in consultation with local residents.
He said tenders had been awarded for repairing the roads that had been dug by the BWSSB.
