Remove illegal hoardings in 30 days: Upa Lokayukta

BBMP’s zonal joint commissioners to be held responsible for dereliction of duty if directive is not followed

Upa Lokayukta Subhash B. Adi has come down heavily on the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for unchecked banners, buntings and illegal ads in the city.

Held responsible

In a recent order, he said that BBMP’s zonal joint commissioners would be held responsible for illegal ads and hoardings.

He warned the officials that if illegal advertisements and hoardings were not removed within a month it would be considered dereliction of duty.

Submit report

Mr. Adi has asked the city police to help BBMP officials to remove illegal hoardings in the city. He has directed the BBMP and Urban Development Department to submit an action taken report by August 20.

Mr. Adi held a review meeting recently based on the complaint filed by a social activist. BBMP officials, on their part, said that they had permitted 2,260 hoardings in the city and maintained that there were only 1,017 unauthorised hoardings. 98 of these cases were pending before various courts.

Spending revealed

BBMP officials also revealed that it was spending Rs. 8 lakh per month to remove illegal hoardings.

They also submitted that of the eight zones, private companies had taken up the tender to remove illegal hoardings in only two zones, while in the rest, none had come forward.
