The Fifth Fast Track Court on Monday convicted a 21-year-old man who raped a mentally unstable girl after attacking her father with a chopper when he came to her rescue in Uttarahalli village in January last year.

Suresh, a habitual offender, had come out on bail in a double murder case four days ago before the rape. He barged into the farmhouse where the girl’s father, Kariappa, was a watchman and attacked the 19-year-old victim. Her screams brought her father running but Suresh felled him with his chopper. He then dragged the mentally challenged girl to an isolated place two kilometres away and raped her.

Subramanyapura police later picked up Suresh. The court sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment and fined him Rs. 20,000.
