A team of Central Crime Branch, accompanied by the dog squad, raided the Central prison at Parappana Agrahara on Wednesday. They found a few grams of marijuana along with five smoking pipes (chilams), crude knives, two mobile phones and four SIM cards.

The team was led by Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Sandeep Patil. They were acting on information that some prisoners were involved in criminal activity in the jail.

Though the CCB has conducted such raids in the past, this is the first time that it has used the dog squad. The four-member canine squad created panic among inmates as they sniffed out cigarettes, beedis and match boxes hidden inside the barracks.

“We found over a dozen knives, which the inmates had made from cutlery provided to them by the prison department. The weapons were hidden under pillows and in the barracks,” said a senior police official. They were allegedly using the weapons to threaten others and get their work done.

The mobile phones were found outside a barrack, and one was hidden under the portrait of a deity. “We are analysing the four SIM cards and call records,” said Mr. Patil.
