The Energy Department on Monday roped in cine stars Puneeth Rajkumar and Ramya as brand ambassadors for its ambitious energy conservation initiative, which will be launched on December 11. The initiative, Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme, will replace conventional electricity bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs.

Mr. Puneeth and Ms. Ramya are associating with the initiative free of cost. Mr. Puneeth said he was happy to associate with a project that helps people by reducing their power bills. Ms. Ramya said it was a rare opportunity for her to get involved in a project that is part of environment sustainability.

Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the actors had been chosen based on a poll that rated them popular cine personalities. Under the programme, which would be launched from Mysuru, the department has proposed to provide six crore 9-watt LED bulbs to households.

Each household will get five to 10 LED bulbs for about Rs. 100 each as against the market price of 400 per piece. They would be door-delivered through meter readers.

According to Mr. Shivakumar, the initiative has the potential to conserve around 1,400 million units per annum, which is equivalent of the State’s power consumption for a week.

The Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme will be launched on Dec. 11
