One of the stalls where saplings were being sold, at the three-day Krishi Mela in the University of Agricultural Sciences campus in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Krishi Mela is a platform for the latest technologies and developments in agricultural science, but pseudo science also found space at the event. From products like green coffee beans to reduce your weight and ‘agnihotra’ to cleanse the environment, from cow urine as a panacea for diseases, including cancer, to an anti-ageing elixir, the Mela had it all.

The organic farming section had multiple stalls claiming medicinal cure in the name of ayurveda. A stall that sold panchagavya (milk, buttermilk, ghee, cow dung and cow urine) products also had an agnihotra, ‘the simplest form of homa’ where two shlokas are to be chanted before burning a cow dung cake. The goal is to cleanse the environment and the mind. It also sold other panchagavya products that claimed to cure many health disorders.

Another stall was offering an anti-ageing drink with the salesperson promising that with various combinations, the elixir is an answer to incurable diseases.

There were several stalls selling anti-ageing and weight loss solutions, all advertised as herbal products.

Grow exotic tropical fruits in your home

With a green thumb and the right saplings, it just may be possible to grow exotic tropical fruits, like Miracle fruit (Sysepalum ducificum) from Africa, Rambutans from Indonesia or Durian Monthong from Malaysia, in your home garden in Bengaluru.

A Kerala-based biotech firm was selling exotic tropical fruit plant and tree saplings from across the world. Of the 30 exotic fruit saplings, a large collection seemed to be from Malaysia, including Pulasan fruits, Durian Monthong, Longan and Mangosteen.
