As many as 21 members of the Karave Yuva Sene were arrested and lodged in judicial custody after they allegedly damaged property at the official residence of Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait here on Saturday morning.
They were arrested on a complaint by a security guard who alleged that he was manhandled by the protesters and also said that he saw them damaging the property.
The protesters alleged that the State government had failed to curb private schools from fleecing parents by charging exorbitant fees. They also took umbrage at the fact that the government was permitting new English medium schools to function.
They allegedly smashed flower pots, window panes and damaged the gate, after which police from High Grounds arrested them.
Mr. Sait said that they refused to give him a memorandum and specific complaints of schools that had hiked fees.
“I do not know why they staged a protest four months after the academic year has started,” he said.
