Protesters at Bellandur demand clean lakes

May 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Bengaluru:

A few hours before the legislative committee on encroachments made their halt at the still-frothing Bellandur Lake, numerous residents held a protest demanding clean lakes in the city.

Holding placards – that read “Save Yemalur Belandur Lake”, “Save lakes to save the city” and “Give us clean air and clean water” – the residents gathered at the lake on Wednesday morning.

Troubled residents

Over the past two weeks, Yemalur area, which abuts Bellandur Lake, has seen six-feet-high froth on their roads, flood due to breach of embankment, and even incidents of methane catching fire amidst the folds of froth.

Suresh Kumar, a member of the committee that visited the late on Wednesday evening, said, “The stench was so bad, our heads started spinning within half an hour.”

Apart from looking at encroachments, he said the committee would also recommend measures to ensure preservation of lakes and curtailing pollution.
