Protest against ‘honour' killing

In the past three months, two “honour” killings have been reported from the neighbouring districts of Mandya and Mysore. Protesting the lack of “concrete action” against what can be perceived as “a trend”, women's rights activists protested at the Corporation Circle here on Thursday.

The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) staged a protest demanding immediate action by police authorities on the issue. The issue must be seen in the context of casteist and feudal forces being allowed to get away with hate crimes, the protesters said.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Smruthi, a 28-year-old assistant professor at the Government First Grade College at Kuderu in Chamarajanagar district, was strangled to death by her brother at her residence.

The AIDWA has demanded that the Union Government frame a comprehensive law to tackle “honour crimes”. The rights group has collected signatures from across the country in support of the proposed Bill. It is hoped that the Bill would be tabled in the ongoing Budget session of Parliament.
