Slogans like “Shoot the rapist” and “Delhi police, shame, shame,” and “Sheila Dixit down down,” rent the air as activists of Aam Admi Party (AAP)-Karnataka gathered at the Brigade Road-Residency Road junction in the city on Wednesday to condemn Sunday’s violent gang rape on a moving bus in the national capital.
“The incident is a great shame for our democracy. It is time all citizens came together against the government,” said Mansi Sharma of AAP. R.K. Mishra from Nava Bharat Party and Ashwin Mahesh from Loksatta Party also participated in the protest.
Though some Bangaloreans stopped by and watched the protestors shout slogans, most chose to walk on. One of the onlookers, Sayandeep Dutta, who works in a private company, said he too condemned the gangrape and supported the protest, but added that the AAP’s protest “looks more like a party promotion”. “I don’t support any such promotion.”
Ashwin Kunal Singh, who was one among the group of students from Sri Mahaveer Jain College, watching the protest, said he supported the protest.
Ramesh Seenivasan, a marketing executive at a private consultancy firm, said: “The Indian Penal Code is made for humans. Rapists are not humans: they are beasts,” and called for harsher punishment for the perpetrators of the crime.
