Private schools asked to admit students under non-RTE quota in March

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has issued a circular instructing the private school managements to begin admissions to non-RTE quota seats in March.

As per the circular issued by the DPI, private school managements will have to furnish the number of seats available on 1 March 2014 and issue applications between March 20 and March 31. The list of selected and rejected candidates with reasons has to be published on April 4. The last date for the public to file objections to the list is April 7, and the schools have to announce the first list of selected candidates under the non-RTE quota by April 8.

The last date for admissions for candidates chosen in the first list is April 15, while the second list of selected candidates should be notified on April 16. As per the calendar of events, the last date for admission for those selected in the second list is April 21.

The DPI circular has instructed unaided schools to fix the tuition fees (for Classes 1 to 8) based on a formula suggested by the department (total salary paid to teachers plus 30 per cent of the total salary divided by the total number of students). Further, the circular specifies that schools can charge only Rs. 600 under the head of special development fees, Rs. 38 under the head of non-tuition fee for Classes 6 to 8, and Rs. 185 for Classes 9 and 10.

As per the circular , the private school managements are also expected to announce the number of seats available, procedure of admission, and medium of instruction on the notice board.

Meanwhile, the managements said the government directions had come in a little too late. L.R. Shivarame Gowda, chairperson of the Karnataka Federation of Independent Schools’ Management, said the directions issued in the circular would be difficult to follow as schools would be conducting examination during March.
