The police suspect a family feud resulted in a 45-year-old priest setting himself ablaze inside a car in BDA Park, Kumbalgodu, on Mysuru Road on Thursday.

Shivashankar Hebbar, a resident of Kengeri and a priest at Shani Mahatma temple on Mysuru Road, has been identified as the deceased.

The police said Hebbar took his car to the BDA park ground, locked himself in and poured petrol over himself, and then lit a match.

Seeing the car go up in flames, the public alerted the police and the Fire and Emergency Services.

Two fire tenders rushed to douse the fire and shifted the charred body to hospital.

Hailing from Udupi, Hebbar was married for over 14 years and his wife works in a mobile phone company.

The couple, with their 11-year-old son, was residing in Jnana Jyothi Nagar, the police said.
