Pourakarmikas’ ultimatum: fulfil demands or face agitation

December 12, 2013 12:22 am | Updated May 26, 2016 03:15 am IST - Bangalore:

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Pourakarmika and Arogya Gangmen’s Association, which now has newly elected office-bearers, has decided to give the civic administration a month to fulfil all their demands, including recruitment of new staff. Else, the association has threatened to launch an agitation.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, association secretary Pothanna said that the new office-bearers were elected after ousting former president N. Narayan and vice-president Gunashekhar, “as they did not pay attention to solving the issues of pourakarmikas”.

The association’s main demand is the recruitment of 4,000 pourakarmikas. The office-bearers demanded that the old recruitment rules be followed. Mr. Pothanna complained that the health card issued to pourakarmikas is not effective. “Whenever pourakarmikas produce the health card in the 36 specified hospitals, they are first asked to pay up for treatment. If this is the case, what is the use of having a health card?”
