After getting an earful from the High Court over potholes, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) was taken to task by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
On Wednesday, he expressed dissatisfaction over the court having to intervene on the issue while speaking at the launch of ‘Project BBMP Roshini’, a venture between the civic body, Microsoft and Tech Avant-Garde to upgrade BBMP schools to access virtual reality, artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics and IoT.
He asked the civic body why it had to wait for the court’s direction to do its job. He also added that BBMP officials should treat their responsibilities of handling rain-related complaints and cleanliness in the city seriously.
‘English important’
As many as 156 schools and colleges run by the BBMP will be upgraded under the project. The chief minister said it was a positive development that BBMP schools were getting upgraded to a global level, but it is also important now for students to learn English.
Taking a potshot at those who oppose ‘English imposition’, he said organisers of these protests send their children to English-medium schools. The government is not saying don’t learn Kannada, but only that it is also important to teach English, he added.
In the same event, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara urged private companies to come forward to develop tanks in the city on the lines of steps taken by them to upgrade schools and colleges.
