A rowdy-sheeter, allegedly wanted for assault, was shot in the leg late on Monday night. The incident took place in Nandini Layout. “The accused, Bharat Kumar, 25, is in hospital where he is being treated for his injuries, and out of danger,” said the police.

On August 8, Bharat and his associates allegedly assaulted a rowdy-sheeter, Venkatesh, with lethal weapons when he was with his father. Since the incident, the Nandini Layout police had been on his trail.

On Monday midnight, the police control room received a call from a person, who identified himself as Manjunath, claiming that a man had threatened him at knife-point at Laggere, taken his bike and fled.

In a fortuitous turn of events for the police, Manjunath worked with a bike taxi firm. His two-wheeler is equipped with a GPS tracker.

Alerted by the control room, the Nandini Layout police tracked the bike and realised that the person using it was none other than Bharat. On realising that the police were tracking him through the motorcycle, Bharat abandoned the vehicle near Jalahalli and tool refuge in the HMT premises.

When Constable Umesh tried to apprehend him, Bharat allegedly stabbed him and tried to flee, prompting Sub-inspector Lakshman to fire a warning shot in the air. “But when Bharat refused to surrender and continued to attack the constable, the sub-inspector shot him in the leg,” said a police officer.
