Playing pranks on unsuspecting people to record videos and put them up on social media turned out to be costly for a group of seven youths who were arrested by police early on Monday. They were later let off on bail with a warning.

A few passers-by in Sharif Nagar, Yeshwanthpur, who were shocked and scared after confronting a man dressed like a ghost, alerted the police.

The police rushed to the spot and caught Shaan Malik, 20, Naveed, 20, Sajil Mohammed, 21, Sakib, 20, Syed Nabil, 20, Yusif Ahmed, 20, all residents of RT Nagar, and Mohammed Ayub, 20, a resident of Nagawara, and brought them to the police station. The accused are students of city colleges.

The police said the accused made prank videos and uploaded them on social media for traction. As per the plan, one of the accused, wearing a long white kurta and a wig and splashing red paint to make it look like blood, started confronting motorists, pedestrians and people sleeping on pavements, and created panic for some time.

The police questioned them to ascertain the motive and later summoned their parents to the station. The accused were made to give an undertaking and let off on bail after a stern warning.

Videos on YouTube

Investigation revealed that they would upload these videos on YouTube under the title ‘Ghost Prank in Bengaluru’. They tied to scare people the same way early on Monday when they were caught.

The police said the pranks had turned into a menace as many residents in north Bengaluru were scared.

The accused had even tried to scare the police personnel in mufti without realising that they had come to secure their custody, Mr. Shashikumar said.

A cab driver who was sleeping in his vehicle on the roadside told the police that he was scared out of his wits when the accused walked up to him and scared him through the closed window.

“I was in a deep sleep and woke up and had the shock of my life when a scary man was banging on the window of the car and trying to open it,” he reported to the police.

Another man, who was returning home, got so scared that he fell and sustained minor injuries while trying to run away from the “ghost.”

A senior police officer has warned people of recording such videos which would harm people. This trend to make prank videos and upload them on social media to gain popularity can be dangerous as people may get hurt, the officers added.
