Plea to relax CRZ rules

Tourism Minister R.V. Deshpande on Monday said that the State has asked the Union government to relax Coastal Regulation Zone norms to give a push to beach tourism. Currently, norms forbid any activity within a distance of 200 m. from the high tide line. “We have sought relaxation of the distance to about 80 m.

The Union government is looking at our proposal favourably and the approval should be given soon,” Mr. Deshpande said on Monday.

With a coastline stretching 320 km. and 44 beaches, the State has huge potential for coastal tourism. The Minister said that issues pertaining to cleanliness of beaches as well as safety of tourists, especially women, are being addressed by the State.
