Plan to introduce dedicated bus lane in 12 high-density corridors

After several attempts in the past, agencies in the city are once again exploring the possibility of providing dedicated lanes for Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses.

On Sunday, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner B.H. Anil Kumar said that by November 1, the civic body, along with the DULT, BMTC, the Traffic Police and others, will earmark as many as 12 hi-density corridors for introduction of dedicated bus lanes.

He inspected some of the roads identified for the project.

"I am optimistic that this project will take off. This move is also aimed at encouraging people to use public transport," he said.

As part of the plan, busy signals, and junctions across the city will be improvised.

Transport experts and the BMTC officials have been asking the agencies concerned to provide dedicated lanes to operate buses. In the past, the DULT had said that a dedicated lane could be provided on Old Airport Road. Agencies held several rounds of deliberations, but the plan failed to take shape.

A decade ago, the government had mooted a plan to build a Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) from Hebbal to Central Silk Board, but that, too, remained on paper. The project was dropped couple of years ago after the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) decided to build a route on Outer Ring Road.
