Broken pieces of registration number plate of a motorcycle helped the police nab a 21-year-old BPO employee, who had sped away after knocking down an 80-year-old woman on Hosur Road Expressway on Saturday night.

Gururaj Sayivamshi, a native of Andhra Pradesh and a BPO employee working in Electronics City, was returning home from work when he knocked down the woman killing her on the spot when she was crossing the road at around 11.15 p.m.

The impact of the accident was such that the woman was thrown up in the air before she crashed on the ground sustaining severe head injuries. While she died on the spot due to excessive bleeding, Gururaj sped away from the spot. However, the fibre glass number plate of his bike was also broken into pieces due to the impact and scattered around.

Passersby, who noticed the woman’s body, alerted Madiwala traffic police. The body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination. The police looked around for clues to identify the person involved in the hit-and-run case, and found nine pieces of the registration number plate of a motorcycle.

The police gathered all the pieces, and with the help of RTO officials managed to trace Gururaj and picked him up on Sunday morning from his paying guest accommodation in Gonidashettypalya in Electronics city.

The police recovered the motorcycle and Gururaj reportedly confessed that he was involved in the accident. The police subjected him for medical examination to ascertain whether he was drunk, but the results were negative. “We have booked him under death due to negligence and also under rash and negligent driving charges, and remanded him in judicial custody,” a senior police officer said. The police are trying to ascertain the identity of the victim.
