A 32-year-old woman was killed and four of her friends were injured when the car by which they were travelling crashed into a tree while being reversed near Hosa Nijagal Gate on Tumakuru highway in the early hours of Sunday.

The police identified the deceased as Kavitha Seema, 32, a native of Solapur in Maharashtra. The injured are Juhi Sharma, 45, who was working with Kavitha in a hotel at Majestic here, and their friends Parvez, 38, Syed Firoz, 42, and Syed Moosa, 37, who are into small business and are residents of R.T. Nagar.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 1.15 a.m. when they were heading to Tumakuru. Kavitha, who works as a receptionist, joined the others on the way after finishing work on Saturday. When they were near Hosa Nijagal Gate, Firoz rammed the car into the median. While reversing, he pressed the accelerator recklessly and the car crashed into a roadside tree, the police said.

Kavitha, who was sitting in the rear seat, was killed on the spot. Then, an unidentified vehicle rammed into the car and sped away, the police said.

A few hours later, passers-by noticed the victims lying in the car and rushed them to a hospital before alerting the police.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims left the city around 10.30 p.m. and had dinner at a dhaba on the highway. The police said all of them were drunk. They said they had recorded the driver’s statement.

All the injured are recovering in a private hospital in Tumakuru.
