Five women, two of them senior citizens, were taken for a ride by felons posing as helpful policemen concerned about their safety. All four lost their gold jewellery worth lakhs to these conmen.
Three men accosted Lalitha (69) on Vidyanagar Main Road in Girinagar while she was on her way back from a temple saying they were from the Central Crime Branch (CCB).
Convincing her that it was unsafe for her to wear her jewellery, they managed to get her to remove her gold worth Rs. 2 lakh. They then offered to wrap it up for her. She complied and they fled. Too late she realised she had been conned, police said.
Meanwhile, two men flashing ID cards stating they were policemen intercepted Manjula (50) while she was returning from the bank. They used the usual spiel and got her to part with her chain and a pair of bangles.
She realised she’d been taken for a ride when she got home and found that the packet they had wrapped for her contained only some stones and not her 90 gm of jewellery.
Yamuna, (50), a resident of 36th Cross Tilaknagar, was going to the temple around 10.30 a.m. when she was stopped near the 9th Block. She lost gold weighing 60 gm through the same modus operandi .
Then it was the turn of Asha (52), a resident of Koramangala, a few minutes later when she handed over her 20 gm gold chain near 28th Main Tilak Nagar to two men.
The fifth victim of the day was Radhabai (70), a retired teacher, who was walking to a shop to get chocolates for her grandson at 5.30 p.m. at Vyalikaval Society in K.G. Halli. She lost her chain and bangles to a duo, which cost her Rs.1.5 lakh.
The police suspect the hand of the same gang in over a dozen such cases in the last few days.
