Alert staff at a government observation home caught an 18-year-old resident while he was trying to cut the grille of an iron door with a blade in an attempt to escape.

The accused, Veeramani, had sourced the blade from a guard on Saturday night, said the police.

Based on a complaint filed by the superintendent of the observation home, Kamalavva Bailuru, the Madiwala police arrested the guard Madhu.

According to the police, Veeramani had been arrested by the Amruthalli police in connection with a robbery in the house of a businessman in August 2017. As he was a minor at the time, he was sent to the government observation home.

“However, when he turned 18 and came to know that he would be shifted to Parappana Agrahara prison, he decided to escape,” said the police.

He befriended Madhu and asked him to procure an axe-blade. On Saturday, he cut open the grille of an iron gate, but while trying to escape, he was caught by security staff.
