It was not a pretty picture at Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, the largest lung space in the city, on Tuesday morning, as half a dozen tractors and 10 goods autos made their way out loaded with garbage.

The 10-day show, which ended on Monday, attracted over two lakh visitors who left behind huge quantities of plastic bottles, wrappers, spoons, glasses and plastic bags. Incidentally, Lalbagh was declared a ‘plastic free zone’ way back in 2007.

The quantum of garbage post the show more than doubles, C.G. Nagaraj Joint Deputy Director, Horticultural Department told The Hindu on Tuesday. Nearly 70 people had to be deployed to clean the area, against the 40 people who are usually tasked with the job. “Though we take care to check visitors, some vendors managed to get inside the gardens and were found using plastic plates and covers,” he said, adding that neither the visitors nor the vendors were paying heed to their pleas to keep the place clean.
