Allaying fears of commuters, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) on Wednesday issued a release stating there is no threat to the safety of Hebbal flyover as reported in the media. The release stated that the crack, which was being reported to have occurred on the structure, was a ‘construction joint where multiple arms consisting of pre-cast segments linked to cast in suit concrete’.
An expert technical team comprising R. Jaiprasad, retired engineer-in-chief, National Highways, and R.K. Jaigopal , bridge expert and member of Bridge Standards and Specifications — IRC, and S.P. Somashekar, project director, NHAI, along with senior officials of BDA carried out an inspection of the flyover on Wednesday.
The release stated that as the flyover had been commissioned in 2003, no audit had been carried out. After several reports in the media about the crack, the BDA ordered a site inspection.
The first inspection was carried out on September 19. On September 25, a high-level review meeting was conducted under the chairmanship of BDA Commissioner Rakesh Singh, following which the expert team was taken to the site on Wednesday.
