No more interviews for govt. clerical staff posts

Owing to discrepancies and rampant corruption in selection of candidates in appointments, the State Cabinet on Tuesday decided to implement recommendations made by P.C. Hota, former UPSC Chairman, in direct recruitments made by various departments.

The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has already implemented recommendations of the Hota Committee. After changes to the Karnataka State Civil Services (Direct Recruitment by Competitive Examination and Selections) (General) Rules, 2006, the departments will not hold interviews during the selection of candidates for ‘C’ grade posts (first division clerks), which used to be held earlier. Also, there will be reduction of 0.25 marks for wrong answers to each question. However, interviews would be conducted for selection of candidates for category ‘A’ and ‘B’ posts, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting.

The government has decided to implement the committee’s recommendations in department recruitments in order to ensure transparency in the recruitment of candidates. In its 58-page report, the committee has made wide-ranging recommendations for recruitments.

The Cabinet approved amendments to the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976, for scrapping trade licences issued for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by urban local bodies. He said KMC Act would be amended to abolish the trade licence system for MSMEs in accordance with the New Industrial Policy. The exemption would apply for only MSMEs.

The decision was taken following complaints of harassment and corruption over issuance of trade licences. The decision comes in the wake of Karnataka being ranked ninth in the World Bank Report on Ease of Doing Business.
