Narrow escape for BMTC bus passengers after driver collapses

Several vehicles damaged as they collide when bus screeched to halt, three persons in an autorickshaw injured

Passengers travelling on a BMTC bus and other motorists on the Hebbal road had a narrow escape when the driver of the bus fell from his seat due to a seizure near Kempapura junction, near Hebbal flyover, on Saturday afternoon.

The bus conductor, Thimma Reddy, showed quick thinking and pulled the hand brake to stop the bus and avert a major mishap. However, two autorickshaws, a motorcycle and a car were damaged as they collided when the bus screeched to a halt in the middle of the road.

Three persons who were travelling in the autorickshaw sustained injuries and were rushed to the Baptist Hospital.

According to the police, the incident occurred at Kempapura junction near Hebbal flyover at around 12.30 p.m.

The bus was coming from Yelahanka to the city market area, when bus driver Venkatesh collapsed from his seat. Passengers raised an alarm for help, prompting Thimma to pull the hand brake.

Thimma Reddy soon called the control room and informed officials of the incident, while passersby called for an ambulance .

A traffic police constable, who was on duty, rushed to help and shifted the driver to Baptist Hospital .
